Our history

First-generation antihistamines

Originally, allergy relief came from first-generation antihistamines—effective but often sedating.

Fexofenadine is created

Then a new solution emerged with a molecule that brought non-drowsy allergy relief by staying out of the brain. This breakthrough, fexofenadine, was designed to relieve allergy symptoms without crossing the bloodbrain barrier, proving you could have effective relief with 0% brain interference from drowsiness. That's why Allegra is a no-brainer!1-4

Introduced in 1996 as a prescription drug, fexofenadine quickly became a household name.

Manufacturing

At our Chattanooga facility in Tennessee, sustainability leads the way. Production is powered with clean, renewable energy, cutting our carbon footprint and driving us toward a greener future. We're not just making medicine—we're trying to make a difference.

Climate action

We're on a mission to cut carbon emissions across all our manufacturing sites. Through energy efficiency programs, renewable electricity, and transitioning from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives like biomass, biogas, and heat pumps, we're making major strides. Since June 2023, our Chattanooga site has cut CO2 emissions by 78% from our 2019 baseline, and now runs on 100% renewable electricity.

Waste vs. Recycling

Reducing waste and boosting circularity is a priority at our manufacturing sites. Our target? Zero waste to landfills and a 90% material recovery rate by 2025. Again, our Chatanooga site is leading the way as only 4% of waste still goes to landfills. We're almost there, and soon we’ll hit that zero-waste milestone.

Guarding natural ecosystems

Across all our manufacturing sites we are conserving natural resources. Since 2022, we've launched programs to eliminate pharmaceutical residues from our water streams and aim to reduce water withdrawals by 20% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. But that’s not all—by 2030, all sites near sensitiveecosystems will have detailed Biodiversity Management Plans in place, ensuring we protect local plants and wildlife.

Packaging

Allegra is on a green mission, and we're not slowing down! We have shifted to recycled or FSC-certified materials for our cartons and leaflets, supporting sustainable forests and cutting waste. Plus, we’re trimming down packaging wherever we can.

And the big goal? By 2025, all our paper will come from sustainable sources. Some Allegra products in the U.S. already use SFI-certified cartons.

Keep an eye out for the FSC/SFI logo on our packaging—it’s our promise to protect the planet, one box at a time. We know it's not the norm to be this excited about cardboard boxes, but we just can't help it!
